"Porthole 2024" 17"X7"X3" Paper Mache Sculpture with Seashells and an Oil Painting
This sculpture invites the observer into it's dreamlike world, using elements and imagery from the ocean to evoke a sense peaceful tranquility. The shape of the sculpture alludes to the shape of a home, eliciting a feelings of warmth and familiarity. The exterior is adorned with an array of natural elements, including seashells, small snail shells, and a piece of dark, weathered driftwood at the peak, which gives the piece a raw, organic energy. The shells add a coastal, almost ethereal feel, as if this shrine were an offering to the sea or a memory of the ocean’s vastness and mystery. Overall this piece reflects the dreamlike sense of stylized magical realism that is a hallmark of Colette Cosentino's work.
